Going to have to do it....
« on: December 16, 2014, 02:22:39 PM »
Next Spring I will try some detecting and some digging, starting on our place. There is an old outhouse that hasn't been used in probably 60 years that a friend and I will dig. I don't think that one is the original to the house, but I don't know for sure. I bought a lower end Bounty Hunter (Pioneer 505) several years ago, but have never done much with it. It has a "Gold Nugget" small coil as well as the 8-1/2" coil. Our place is the 20 acres that has the original stone house on it (the property was divided and sold over the years); the abstract goes back to 1845 so I am hoping to possibly find something of interest. We have found 3 pieces of clay pipes, some old small medicine bottles and a couple of forged pieces of iron that have been brought up by frost, critters, etc. I will need some of your expert guidance, and maybe will invest in a higher end detector later. For sure, I will need to go back and re-learn the technique for operating my detector.

Sounds like fun, Mazo. I had a metal detector a few years ago, but the head broke off the stem (it was NOT supposed to come off, but it did). Since I only ever used it maybe 3 or 4 times, I never got another one, too many other things to invest my money into. However, sounds like you have a "golden" opportunity there. I hope ya DO find some gold (mebby a coin or two). Let us know how it goes. We can hunt vicariously with ya.   (T^

It is getting to the point where just about anybody (even Mazo) can strap a small web cam on and we indeed can participate.

Let me introduce the concept of "editing" to you, Mazo.
You're waving the wand around and suddenly you rip off your headphones for the shrill scream being emitted.
The live cam and mic can pick up the screech that both you and the detector are putting out.
Everybody on the forum is hot with anticipation of what you just found.
You look into the camera, "Sorry guys, have to cut off the feed for a bit..."
Then you upload a photo like this:

With the caption "I told them not to hurry, but would they listen?  Nooooooo.  They said 'Mr. Mazo, with a find like that, we wish to provide the utmost security'..."

And then the next day you add "Well, CARP!  The web cam is on the fritz.  I'd show you still photos, but some government agency I never heard of before took my cameras and computers.  I'm in the library typing this."

See, there's a Forum Rule that states "No Photo, Didn't Happen."

Use it )L$

I got a used detector I picked up a few years ago.  Don't know if it works or not.  Guess one of these days I need to get it out open it up, snap it together put batteries in it and see if it works.
Will let you know when I do.

Someone bought Dad one years back. The only thing he used it for was locating electric wires we buried years before.
I brought it to where I live in Fond du Lac. Took it in the backyard and the thing went crazy. Screeching and beeping and chirping constantly. I adjusted and adjusted the dials with no real satisfaction.
Then after a few attempts.I remembered that most all of the city of Fond du Lac was built on marsh and swamp. The city of landfill.  ^y%

I have a pretty good metal detector here. Kimmy got it for me.
Kim's Mom lost a ring around her house. I need to get over there with my metal detector and find that ring. Kimmy's Mom said the ring was about $3500.

P.S. If I find it...I'm going to sell it!  (?^

Metal detecting is the most aggravating thing you will ever do. It can also be the most rewarding. Not necessarily in value but in excitement. Digging up a silver coin never loses its thrill.

Hey Sam, most detectors signal the "find" by varying the sound.
Does yours have a cool readout or something that scrolls across the screen like

Whoa, wait a minute there Sam.  Back up.  A little to the left.  Back.  Back.  Now right some more... Ah!  It seems like under this dirt is something valuable.  YES!  Here be Kimmy's mom's ring.  Now for heaven's sake and continued access to the 'fridge, don't you dare sell the ring!

Hi Classanr, mine does have the headphones. You don't have to use them.
Mine is called a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw 2.
I'll get a picture up soon.
Mine also uses 2, 9volt batterys.

Most decent detectors have some kind of meter you can go by. Newer ones are digital but my old White's Di/pro 6000 is analog with a needle. The meters will work but aren't as accurate as the sound when pinpointing. The meter is mostly to help judge what's in the ground. Bounty Hunters are entry level detectors. They do work well but don't have much depth.
