I did alot of detecting while in the military, all over the place! Now! I hunt the public parks and the beaches around all the lakes here. I find alot of modern coins and jewelry. For me,its alot like fishing, the excitement of waiting for that bite! Or! In this case that good solid beep to go off in your headphones!!! Another one of my many hobby's. {+*

I've got an old White's Di/Pro 6000 SL. I used to hunt Civil War relics and old coins. Haven't used it in a couple of years tho. I had a buddy that used a Bounty Hunter Land Star and he did pretty good with it.

Bounty Hunter gets a bad rap! They may not go as deep on the small stuff, but they work very well! As with alot of hobby's you always get alot of snob's who look down on the bounty hunters because of there low cost and lack of useless gadgets that are on the high price ones. The Truth is, all detectors all work on the same basic principle. Yes sir! I also know some very happy Bounty hunter Land Star owner's. Of coarse! If your hunting for gold nugget's its a whole different ball game as far as detectors go!

ofitg, You have a memory like a trap! You remembered Germany.LOL! Yes i did! But! It was not,how should i say,not legal. I was young and looking for adventure and did it anyway's.We never got caught, but we never found anything worth while. We had to detect in area's where we were out of site or do it at night. It was just too hard and we couldn't hunt in prime area's. So! I have no good finds to tell you about! The best thing i ever found detecting, was a 1 carat diamond 18k gold wedding band. For me, its the thrill of the hunt, not the kill.

With detectors you pretty much get what you pay for. A Bounty Hunter Land Star is about the cheapest one I would fool with. I dunno if Big 5 is gonna sell those. A Land Star is good down to about 4 inches on a quarter.

Tom, That is a hard question to answer, and i will tell you why! Here is the problem . If you tried the hobby already and fell in love with it, i would steer you towards something your going your be happy with for a long time. In your case, you have never tried it. I am afraid if you got something low cost and you really enjoy the hobby, you will grow out of that low cost detector very quickly and not be happy with it and then be stuck with it. So! that is my dilemma!

Hawg, where'd you go hunting for the civil war relics, what did you use, and what did you find?
