How to raise/replace front sight Pietta Target model?
« on: September 26, 2020, 03:58:01 AM »
Have a Pietta 1858 Target model bought new a few months ago.

It shoots very high, rear sight is bottomed out.

The front sight appears to have a screw holding it in place but when the screw is removed the front sight does not move.  does it just tap out once the screw is removed?

Is there a way to raise the front sight, it doesn't appear that there is.

Can the front sight be replaced with a taller one, if so where would I find replacements?

Thanks, Matt.

Just remove grub screw and tap the sight out of it's dovetail with a plastic or rubber hammer.

I used to have the exact same revolver back in the UK. Mine shot high too.

It was stainless and I got a local gunsmith to mill up a replacement front sight. A ramped one rather like a Smith and Wesson 686.

Then it shot of aim at 25 yards.

The only other way you'll get a taller front sight for this revolver is to get someone with a TIG welder to add some material to the blade then file it or preferably mill it into shape.

If it is blued steel, re-blue it or if it's stainless polish it up.

For target shooting you could try a lighter load and see if that prints a bit lower ?

Thanks for the reply, glad you got yours sorted out.

I thought about trying to adjust other variables but the gun functions and shoots well, the groups are tight, just high.  Even with different loads it shoots about 16" high @ 20 yards.

Ideally I'd love to just find a replacement front sight that is taller and as you said I could always file down a little if needed.

Here is a pic of the front sight.

The dovetail base that slides into the slot in the barrel is appr .222" wide.

The height from the part of the base that rests on the top of the barrel is appr .468"

The distance from the front of the sight to the center of the hole where the screw goes through to attach it to the barrel is appr .750".

Is this a common enough part I can just order new ones with different heights?

It is a common part and easy to buy a replacement, but I don't think they are available in different blade heights ?

That's what I'm finding.

May try to cut the notch in the rear sight deeper.

How about epoxying a piece of wire the diameter of the sight blade to the top and painting in black?  Or, if HI Viz is your preference, a piece the day glo weed whacker line of the right diameter? GF

Thought about that as well, and may end up with something like that.

For now I've deepened the notch on the rear sight so want to shoot it again as is before moving on to anything else.

How much this adjusts the POI will determine the next step.

Success!

Just cutting the rear notch deeper effectively moved the POI and the pistol now shoots well.
