Title: DD4lifeusmc (update)
Post by: mike116 on May 18, 2019, 09:43:44 PM
Yesterday,  I made the drive to Cheyenne Wyoming to visit with DD.   First a little background on DD's situation is in order...…..
The last time I saw him was March 31st so it has been 7 weeks since we last talked.    At that time DD had suffered a seizure that had paralyzed most of the right side of his body.  He was walking but just barely.  The seizure was caused by 3 brain tumors that had developed recently.    He preferred not to talk about it much but DD had contracted a form of cancer caused by his exposure to Agent Orange during his service in the Viet Nam war.    He first learned of his diagnosis almost five years ago when he learned of the cancer which had started to grow in his chest.    DD became a patient of the "Agent Orange Project" carried on by the Veterans Administration which entitled him to special benefits.
A few days after I visited DD at his home his doctors decided he needed skilled nursing care and they admitted him to the VA hospital in Cheyenne.   The doctors had decided all treatment options had been exhausted and so released him to Hospice Care.
Yesterday when I arrived for a visit I was told that DD had requested a transfer to a VA Hospital closer to his parents home in Nebraska.    A bed had opened up just a couple hours earlier in the VA facility in Grand Island Nebraska.   They had loaded him in a helicopter and flew him out of Cheyenne just before I arrived there yesterday.    It saddens me to have missed my last chance to visit with him.
I did meet with two of DD's friends in Cheyenne.   One is an old Marine buddy and the other a close neighbor.  They provided me with a few details about his last days in Cheyenne but I think it will suffice to say here that DD is not expected to last long.
I am in contact with DD's friend and the executor of his estate so I will be kept informed of his status.   I will update this thread as soon as I learn anything new.

Life is a great blessing and a heap a fun but there are some aspects to it that are just sad beyond words.

As to Vietnam - it’s a “gift” that keeps on giving and still stings like a dead damn wasp.

Thanks Mike.

I can only get updates through his estate manager in Cheyenne.   I have a call into him but have not heard back.   HIPA laws won't allow the hospital to give out any information.

Right  now I don't even know exactly where DD is.   He has moved to another facility in Nebraska.   He is now close enough for his Dad and step Mom to visit.    They are both nearly 95 years old and can't travel far.     I hope to hear where he is living soon.

FINAL UPDATE

I found out today what I had suspected for some time.    DD4lifeusmc  passed away on July 23rd.   The executor of his Estate was supposed to let me know but failed to call me.  I tried to call him several times but did not get a hold of him until today.   He has a lot to deal with and calling me was not high on his priority list.

Most people who dealt with DD on the gun forums never even knew his real name,  he was very private and protected his personal information vigorously.   I can say now that his name was Steve and that he left behind a legacy of generosity.     All of his leatherworking tools and equipment (a substantial amount) were donated to the Boys Home in Torrington Wyoming.   The rest of his Estate is being sold and all the proceeds are donated to the Wyoming "Toys for Tots" program that he devoted a lot of time and energy to.   The "Toys for Tots" program is a favorite charity of both the USMC and many "biker" organizations.   Steve's contribution to them will be substantial and will help out many children who would have nothing otherwise.

So sorry to hear this news, I bought quite a number of items from him over the years and he helped me load my video on this site. DD4lifeusmc will be greatly missed on this forum and others he was on. One really nice gentleman who gave all of us a fair deal when we purchased items from him.  And what a great thing for him to donate his estate to worthy causes.

Thank you Mike for the update.

Steve was incredibly generous in life, it is fitting that his generosity continues as his legacy.
Whether he knew it or not, he lived the concept of the Native American "Give-away"
That would be his last and biggest Give-Away.

I am proud to say I have one of his "last" personal Remington NMA revolvers, internals packed with grease (his personal style), and a photo
of the tight group he shot on a coffee can. This revolver is as smooth as a colt 1873 SAA.

I will make a point to get my butt out to the canyon this weekend to send up tobacco in his name and "make smoke" with that revolver.

From what we know of him on the forum, I can say he lived life on his terms and passed over on his terms.

My Lakotah brothers have taught me that when a person "passes over" , We who are left grieve because we will miss them;
But they are not gone , they are just continuing their journey .

This is just so sad, although he warned us what was in his in-tray.
He will leave a big gap.
He was known to us as DD4, but also had an address alias as CC Mountainman in Brundage.
Me and my wife were lucky enough to visit with Steve in Cheyenne in 2016, while he was still going strong, although his voice was affected, sounded a bit like a harsh Lois Armstrong.
He took care of us for two days, showing us around interesting places. We also met briefly with the guy who is now the executor of Steve’s will (he’s a fellow Marine and at least as much a clam as Steve was). We hanged out two evenings at Steve’s Veteran Club, where he was a driving force. One of Steve’s parade uniforms is exhibited in that club.
Steve had a really tough life, not only as a Nam guy, but also on a personal and family level, so it is amazing how he could have been so caring and generous.
Steve was a very, very good man.
He probably didn’t ride into the sunset. More likely into the sunrise.

I’m not aware of having actually met DD but it could have happened.  For awhile we lived only about four or five miles from one another. In the early/mid 1970’s he was at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton  and I was holding down a place in San Clemente.  In those days as a young thug GS-10 I had occasion to visit Pendleton sometimes and even used one of their pistol ranges (We were the ones with long hair, the jars called us spooks and DOJ got billed for the ammo). I like to think we may have passed one another on the grounds there or in some on-base hallway and nodded and said good morning.  That’s a hope and thought on my mind just now.

I placed a few orders with DD (including pounds tons of conical 45-190S’s) and he was ever fair and square and sold full measure with some lagniappe always kicked in to boot.

Friend Professor said a good thing and that maybe DD isn’t really gone but has only just taken up his next appointed posting on the journey.  Maybe we’ll meet up yet.  Maybe we all will.

Dang.
I suspected, but this is the first confirmation.
May I make a suggestion? Tomorrow night (Friday, the 20th of Sept), at the stroke of midnight, I suggest (depending on where you live) we all go outside and snap a cap in Steve's memory? Of course, if you live in the country, feel free to torch off a hot load. If you live in a duplex or apartment, this could get a bit hairy so don't do anything to get yourself in trouble.
Snapping a cap won't make much more noise than a toy cap gun, but it's the thought that counts. Then report back on this thread if you could contribute to our tiny 21 gun salute.

But like the ball dropping on New Year's Eve, do it whenever your midnight arrives. I'm ready...

Let's try to get at least 21 of us, huh?

Oh, and I fully intend to raise a toast to our fallen comrade as well. Semper Fi, Steve.

I got the memo:  One Remington 1858, three sequential rounds; 30 grains using the last of the Swiss 3f  under Accurate Molds 45-190S conicals run by DD4 himself.

There is a sheer vertical rock faced escarpment on my mountainside.  Used my 6 C cell MagLite for the trail.  Got to the base and then backed off about 200 yards, waited until midnight, held 45º degrees for the top of the cliff and let fly.  The last shot made that fine high-pitched ricochet sound from way up yonder.  The forest got real quiet then.  Even the crickets and cicada a were still. Had an honest pull of good brandy from my hip flask and walked home.  Put on some Anton Bruckner Te Duem, had another pull and cleaned the gun.

It isn’t much in the scheme of things measured by a good man’s life but it was a good thing to do and a great idea.  Thanks Captain, you did real well.

Mission accomplished.
I loaded up the 1858, using stuff I got from Steve. Then shot it the Steve Way, i.e. with a 2" by 4" as a target. Finally cleaned the gun using Steve stuff. Shall have to wait till tonight for a swig of whiskey. I have this agreement with the neighbors, that I shoot Mon thru Thurs between 9 and 11 am. As I did shoot at 9.30 am on the 23rd of Sept, that would have been just after midnight in WI and NE, on the second month after Steve's transitional journey.
