What do you think of loading this way ?
« on: December 04, 2019, 11:51:33 PM »
Almost 60 and new to cap and ball revolvers.
I bought a Pietta New Model Army ,Sheriffs Model

I Read that one could use half a sheet of 2 ply toilet paper ,a small piece of lube about the size of a Kernel of corn placed in the middle of the toilet paper square then take the four corners of the toilet paper square pull them up above the kernel of lube and twist them into a tail and put it down the cylinder hole tail first over the powder then load ball on top.
I am thinking about Loading this way with about 30 grains of Blackpowder,Hornady Round Ball,#10 Primer and for the lube Beeswax and Crisco about 50/50.

If you have experience doing this how do you like this loading method?
Pros ,cons?

Make your lube a little stiffer and cut it into an almost chamber sized cookie and forget the toilet paper.
Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy, and tasteth good with ketchup.

Think that would be better huh?
Got a few questions for you if you don't mind.

You say a little stiffer,like say a 75/25 Beeswax and Crisco ?

Will the Lube cookie have a tendency to break when loaded in the chamber?

I would not have to be concerned with the powder being contaminated with the stiffer lube when kept loaded ?

About how thick would I need to make the cookie ?

Could you recommend a good read or a video so I can study up on how to make the cookies?

Thanks

Hello Craig,

I made a couple of cookie cutters from old cartridges.
I used a 45-70 case for the 44, and a 303 Brit case for the 36.
Pretty simple, drilled out the primer to fit a shoulder bolt through,
put a return spring on the bolt & made a slug to fit inside case to push cookie out.
You take your melted lube and pour it into a bucket of water, about 1/8" thick.
It will harden on top of the water, take sheet out of bucket & have at it.
Re-melt and repeat.

Hope this helps, AntiqueSledMan.

60/40 should be a good enough ratio. I can't help with powder contamination as I don't leave mine loaded or use cookies but you will definitely get contamination with 50/50 and tp. This is the first I've heard of using tp. Where did you come across it?

I make lube cookies with slick poster board.  One disk on either side of the lube pill prevents keeps the lube where it belongs.   I use these cookies in both loose powder loads and in paper and metal cartridges.   I've never had any powder contamination.
Seems to me that Toilet paper would absorb the lube and help wick the lube into the powder,  especially if the lube is on the soft side.
