How old is that blade?

I have no idea other than it was an old Puukko with a rotten wood handle. Just going by the look of it I'd say it was made around the 30's or 40's but no way to know for sure.

The name "Puukko" indicates it is a Finish knife

Yeah, a small Finnish knife with a curved blade and a flat spine. What was left of the handle looked a lot like this one.  http://www.antiquesnavigator.com/d-101461/big-antique-martiini-finland-puukko-hunting-knife-bowie.html

OK, now we're talking. Martiini is big. Fetches large amounts at auctions. So, you'll have to get a proper handle for that gem.

The one in the link sold for 56.00 five years ago. That's not what I'd call a large amount.

Hawg, that handle does seem to be the right size. What were you thinking of for the guard? Iron? Shouldn't be too hard to make what you want.....drill a series of holes for the blade and file between them to open it up.

Yeah, I can do that. I have some blanks but they're too big as is. I was just trying to get by with the least amount of work.  )L$

I like it better with the guard.  What's the knife's purpose? Hunting? Utility? Combat? Culinary? All of the above? I always liked the std M7 bayonet.

Probably none of the above. Maybe a photo op now and then but mostly I just like redoing knives. I usually use antler but didn't have any I thought suitable for this one. I used an M-7 for a dig knife for awhile when I was metal detecting until I got an AK bayonet. Now that's about the best general purpose knife I've seen next to(don't laugh)a Bear Grylls survival knife.  )L$

Yes it will
Maybe, but an AK bayonet won't fit my M16.
