The 8" arrived
« on: March 27, 2015, 07:47:11 PM »
Been talking about and considering for a long time.
The big brown wagon stopped today and the driver handed me this box. {?|
My new 1858 8"
First one I ever picked up , the longer barrel is noticeably heavier than the 5 1/2"

I get to be the first to congratulate you.  Congrats.  Not too much heavier I trust.  What do you think of that new eight inch?  Are you happy with it?    Don't you think an eight and a five point five sort of complement each other?  Man I do.   Tell us what you think Hewy.

After getting it unwrapped and wiping the preservation oil off,fit my hand well and the longer barrel felt
very comfortable. One distinctive difference ,is thumb cocking seemed easier than the 5 1/2"  ???
That is good as I have a small hand.
I think the advertised weight is only about 3 oz more. I LIKE IT.

For Pietta in Cabelas catalogue it says 2 oz. difference.  2lb 9oz  vs  2lb 11oz.  I never weighed mine.  One of the boys here with proper scales should weigh em up and let us know with exactitude.

I'm glad you like your new one.  I have those models and love all hell out of them both.  I shot an eight inch just today along with a '51 and had just the best of times, again.

Good deal then Hewy, take them out and get em dirty.

Nice pair. The little one is quite precious.
Your photo shows how much taller the Pietta front sight is than on my two early EuroArms 8"ers.
Collecting about any color cap and ball revolver as long as it has a top strap and 8", 6 1/2", 5 1/2" or 4" barrel.

Was at the range today for a special timed shooting event using center and rim fire ammo ,so didn't bring the Remington.
However met a fellow BP guy who casts both round ball and conicales for his Ruger 1858 and other guns.
He said he would measure the barrel cylinder bores then hand me a few to try............. _l
Love this hobby and the folks in it.

Got the 8" to the range today. My first experience with Goex fffg. Loaded up
three cylinders, went light just a squeek under 30grs a little cream of wheat
under .454 and .451 balls.
It or me is shooting low left at 25 ft or so. I had to sneak up on center
of a paper plate target, before  puncin a hole in that dinner dish.
First cylinder stuck had a heck of a time removing it, hehehehe BP is dirty )L$
Tried the next 6 with .454 no cereal in the mix, now held front blade on mid right edge
of paper.Low left but on the target.
My 5 1/2 Remmies never did that (^h I did notice the trigger pull is a tiny bit lighter than my others.
I need more practice, and more practice............... ::)
