From what I understand the martially marked '51 Colt Navies were dated from the mid 1850's until the late '50s.
This gun was manufactured in 1857, and final acceptance on the grip is M.M. for M.Moulton.
There is no original finish left on this revolver, but the markings are very clear....including the cylinder scene.
I bought this gun back in December 1990 from David Condon in the U.S. (I am a Canadian)

There's nothing like an original and that's a nice one. (T^

They probably were Sam, or more likely tacks. I've seen butts of a lot of guns with clear imprints of fence staples in them.

Many thanks for sharing these great pictures! I love the '51 Navy!  (T^

Is it for collection only or have you tied it out at the range?

Very nice martial Navy revolver.

I've been looking for one also.  I have a question regarding the inspector's initials on the gun.
I noticed the "S" on barrel behind the barrel address, and the "M" on the cylinder.  What initial is on the brass back strap, just behind the hammer?   And what letter is on the brass grip strap just behind the trigger guard?

Thanks,
Dan
