Far southern Wisconsin joining in.....
« on: April 14, 2019, 01:52:23 PM »
Hello everyone,
I am a retired 66 year old that had a bit of a hiatus from black powder for the past 40 years, and am getting back into it pretty quickly.
As of now, I own 4 1858's by Pietta that I love to death, along with several other bp items.

Being somewhat of a "rescue" type guy......I picked one up used this morning, and the poor thing had sat in the guys gun safe untouched for so long (since 1990) everything was rusted in place. Original box, etc...

Got her back to functioning rather quickly today, and had a hoot doing it!
It took a bit of PB blaster, along with some gentle prodding, over a couple of hours, but I saved it!
Tomorrow will be a complete take apart and cleaning, but at least it is not going to go to waste anymore.

Glad to be aboard, and look forward to learning, and helping others if I can.

Welcome, railshot!   (D@

Oh; that's the Pietta "Target" model (has adjustable rear sight and taller front sight).  That should be some fun.  Let us know what it took to get it to shoot to point of aim.  Some peope (me included) report having to modify that rear sight to get it adjusted low enough.  Also; does the rifling make ~1/4 turn over the length of the barrel (30" trwist) or closer to half a turn (~16 - 18" twist)?

Thanks for the welcome Omnivore!

It is 1/4 turn over the length of the barrel, so a 1 in 30.

3 of mine are targets, and I have yet to fire any of them, but when I do I will report back to the group as to what I had to do to each of them.
I do suspect some amount of fiddling will need to be done, along with finding the best charge for each of them to be accurate.

Hi Railshot, welcome to the forum.  Your recent Rem as pictured looks like new.

Where was it rusted?  Where on the gun did you have to use penetrating oil? How does the bore look after 29 years in a safe?

I guess I should have explained that a bit more... Heheh...
The hammer would only cock about 1/2", the loading lever was stuck and would not drop down, the cylinder was bound up and would not rotate, so all of those places had to be lubed and worked on to get them to move.
Pretty much every part that should move didn't.

The bore is actually really nice thankfully.
