1858 Remington.com shooting contest
« on: May 31, 2011, 10:50:00 PM »
One of "them other forums" is having a shooting contest, mail-in targets judged and the results posted on-line. Since I have not managed to get out and shoot yet, I missed that one. But being the "Official" Remington forum, and not to be outdone, I would like to suggest we do something like that here!
No details yet, just like to see how many are interested at this point.
I'm in...
You?

Target Model is fine. And there will be a separate category for the Navy, so you can mop up that one!

Well, since nobody has commented, I'll run by what I have in mind:

The Oh-Fishull 2011**** 1858 Remington Shooting Contest

1) I hate to put a time frame on things like this, as I know range time for me is;
* expensive, and;
* hard to come by (with my busy schedule). But there has to be SOME sort of deadline for shooting, so we'll make it Labor Day weekend (2011)...that is, Labor Day weekend is the last allowable date for shooting. I will allow a week or so for targets to be mailed in.

2) Rules:
 There will be 3 divisions, based on caliber:
 *Navy
 *Army
 *Other (i.e. .31 cal Pocket Remmy)
The Army and Navy categories will be subdivided into:
* STANDARD (Round ball only)
* OPEN (Conical bullets or ‘other’)

* Targets will be scored as such; 5 shots standing off-hand (freehand) at 25 yards. One hand or two is permitted, whichever you are most comfortable with. No rests or slings allowed. You can print a target from your printer: (see file attachment) or use a standard sheet of printer paper 8-1/2 X 11 with a one inch circle in the center.
* Shoot as many 5-shot group targets as you wish; send in the best one for each category.
* In the STANDARD class, loads will be restricted to round balls only. Either real black or a BP substitute may be used. Wads or lube are permitted, as you normally shoot.
* In the OPEN class, either roundballs or conicals may be used.
* State whether you are shooting an Army or Navy Remmy, as .36 cal groups can measure slightly smaller. Groups will be separated into .36 cal, .44 cal. and “other” (i.e. .31 cal Pocket Remmy.)
* That’s all there is to it! Five shots, standing, at 25 yards. Targets will be scored on:
1) Tightest five-shot group
2) Closest group to the center bull

I will provide an address to mail the targets to, unless someone else would like to volunteer to be the judge. Naturally, we will all be on the honor system here. There will be no “prize” or anything, but the winner of each category will be posted after the contest ends. Good luck, and good shooting!

It all sounds good, but we need more people to make a splash with it. The firing line and the high road allow referral thread to other forums, but I have not announced this one yet.

As for myself,  I don't shoot as often as I should, so my results would not be impressive.

Well, me neither, but that won't stop me!  {L*
It's all for fun, anyway!
If you want to post a link, we could extend the time frame-it's up to you.

Now that I printed one out, that's more like a TWO inch circle in the middle. Use a 2-incher if you're going to freehand your own target, to keep things on an even keel.

 Far as I know. I would think(hope) we'll keep it going for a while. Too dang hot to enjoy a trip to the range here. 101 @ the house when I got home yesterday. I have several guns in need of wringing out. I'm itching to dial the Target Remmie in & see what I can do offhand. I used to be be pretty good when I could see the sights. 'course the older I get the better I was ;)

With the real summer heat now hitting us it will be a long time before I hit the range, and for the most part I do much better with rifles than I do with sidearms unless the target is close.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.  Theodore Roosevelt
