Another 1858 fan joins the fold
« on: February 13, 2019, 08:24:51 PM »
Hello all, and glad to find a dedicated 1858 community.

I’m a Yavapai trained gunsmith, and a federal firearms instructor for my agency. I’ve been a huge fan of the 1858 since I first saw Pale Rider. In the 90’s I purchased my first from Cabelas, along with spare cyclinders, and learned to do the Pale Rider reload quickly and effectively. I even hand made a buscadero shooting rig just for that 1858, taking features from Bianchi, Safariland, and Galco western holsters I knew about. Eventually sold that revolver, and forgot about them for a long time.

Recently my interest in these revolvers has returned. I’ve acquired a nice Shooter’s model from Gunbroker for under $300, and also picked up two fixed 5 1/2” barrel ROA’s. I’m looking forward to tuning these revolvers for competition, and to increase my knowledge in single actions.

Glad to be here!

Couple old photos of my 1858 shooting rig. Yes, I know that’s a Colt in the holster. Now that I have a nice Pietta again, I’ll need to take some new ones!

Howdy, Bleys, from the Eastern Washington/North Idaho border!

A nice Shooter’s model for under $300?  Thief!   :P

Depending on the kind of competition, that one may already be "tuned" for it.  It has larger diameter chambers, more approproate t the barrel groove diameter, but IIRC, it has shorter chambers, meaning less powder capacity.

I acquired it after learning the difference in Shooters models on this forum, and inspecting likely ones on Gunbroker. Found a pawn shop who thought they had a normal 1858 Pietta, and who’s listing blended in with all the others.

Frankly, I’m looking to tinker with it. After much reading on the subject, I’m definitely installing a cylinder bushing. I all too well remember how fast they gun up without that modification. It’s why I switched to a Colt for a while. Other things I’m looking at are tuning the loading lever, fitting and adding a bolt block, smaller trigger guard, hammer stop, main spring tuning, hand improvements, bolt notch leads, cylinder flutes, scallops on the recoil shield, and also blending the frame down to the barrel more like an original.

Lots of the posts here and on CASCity have been very informative. Basically, just want to play around with it since I haven’t worked on revolvers in almost 20 years.  :9)

You think like me, I've done most of those mods.
