Range report: CVA Colonial pistol
« on: January 10, 2019, 08:26:33 AM »
This pistol was assembled from a kit my late father gave me.

Found it shoots the 250 gn TC maxie-balls pretty fair; 15 gns of 777 yields good velocities.
Target shows 5 shots @ 28 yds.

Looks like a big derringer, but a decent shooter.

I had one of those years ago. It's when I first found out me and wood don't get along. Mine had a snail breech and a ramrod.

That’s 315 ft/lb muzzle energy which is significant power.  Fifteen grains of T7 can really deliver.  Nice shooting, Skillet.

Yeah that's impressive velocity for such a heavy ball and a short barrel.  Nice shooting.

Yep, nice shooting! Like Hawg, I built mine from a kit several years ago, never did shoot it. Took it to a rendezvous and sold it.

I like those single shots they seem to shoot well and last for ever. Good shooting Skillet.

These Colonial pistols had tiny front sights. In that older pic I was using a dowel pin replacement.

I since whittled-down a copper penny and brazed it on. Added lanyard, steel belt-clip (not seen, other side), and a few medicine-tacks.

Some of these old, cheap pistols make decent shooters, once you work out some loads

Penny sights!  I like it.  The real coppers are getting a little harder to find nowadays, but I may have to try that on my next project.

Nice photo too.

I have one I am working on now. 10" barrel 45cal. When it is finished I shall test and report how it does. Thinking I may use Black MZ in it. Check out the pics.  (k-

Skillet, I remember seeing this posted on Greybeard a long time ago.
The CVA recommended loading for sidelock pistols is 20 - 40 grains of 3f black under .440 prb.  I never tried maxi or conicals as the twist rate is slow.
You can sometimes get the ramrod on EBay. I glued a magnet inside the lock cutout. This holds the ramrod in so it doesn’t fall out from recoil and handling.

Gillamax, here are my Colonial and Kentucky pistols. Both from kits. The Kentucky shoots nicely with 30 grains Black MX. I put a wad over the powder and ram it, then seat the prb.

Hey Talf,
Got a kit-Kentucky too. It also shoots the maxie balls really well.
These drop from the mold @ abt 250 gns. I harvested a doe with that Kentucky/maxie load, using 32gns of PyroP.

I use a lube of 50/50 paraffin/crisco and a 45-70 case as a cake cutter.
