a scam artist on armslist ....
« on: July 25, 2018, 11:35:59 PM »
Greetings Fellow Remington Fans -

not sure where to put this, so I stuck it in "General"

if you want a laugh, check out this scam artist from missouri. he's had this ad up in various forms for over 8 months.

Seems your link is INOP / missing some info.
Is this it?:
https://tinyurl.com/yd4v5g59

thanks to drobbs the link is fixed.

Remington and Sons 1858 Rifle, New Model. 44 Ball/Cap "Make Offer" $ 4,500

he started out posting it as an "original piece of the old west" and presented it as an original.

I emailed him several times to tell him that he had a beat-up italian replica,
and pointing out ALL the differences between an original and that replica.

when he ignored 3 direct emails I contacted armslist and told them if he kept it up
i'ld call missouri state A.G. and FBI for interstate antique fraud.

then he changed the listing to what you see now.

since it's still up, but with false references removed, I emailed him letting him know that I am posting on about a dozen BP forums so we can share the laugh.

Good catch, Professor.  Fraudsters are just high-end thieves.  Since we can’t drive them to complete extinction (alas) we can at least circumvent their schemes, sometimes - and put a good extirpation on them.  It’s one of the battles that never end.

Some auction houses and dealers are (at least inferentially) complicit in a lot of this nonsense.  They make the attempt possible and get a cut of the proceeds, don’t they?  Aiding & abetting an attempted felon is a felony and likely makes them coconspirators, to boot.

They’re just a pack a’ low-life venomous snakes-in-the-grass and are messin with Our People.  That’s how I feel about it, anyway.   ])M

Well, I was like a rottweiler with lockjaw on the Merwin & Hulbert debacle ...
I kept following them and reporting their antics and failures over, what , a couple years, on the CAS City forums. that one ran quite a few pages....

oh, look, bedbugbilly tried to call me out chastise and warn me over on the firing line, so I thanked him for his concern....

if one jumps over there briefly, one can see where I posted the photo of the fake remington stamping vs an original borrowed from the Rock Island Auction House

https://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6634970

I beleive that all it takes for evil to win is for good men to remain silent.

and you all can see how difficult it is to shut me up...

the world of high $ guitars went through a bad spate of this +/- 10 years ago..........it has always been so, and is still common practice today.
and when the Chinese counterfeiters started selling $9000 new Gibsons for $189 and  $200,000 antique Gibsons for $389 people actually fell for it (out of pure greed).

several of us actually exhausted ourselves to burnout over this, with the daily postings of "Why doesn't my $200 Les Paul Custom play or sound decent?"

i'm glad someone in the BP world is willing to pound their head against the wall !

Thanks Prof. Marvel

Hi, Caveat emptor

If the greedy or stupid get burned, good.

My Dear Richard -

no mailicous intent to you here, but I must say my piece:

Why blame the victim?
Caveat Emptor is supposed to be a warning, not a smug judgement and sentence!

Would you advocate letting a purse-snatcher get away with it because the victim was not vigilant?
I helped chase one down last month, we got the ladies purse back.

Would You allow a gypsie to pull the $50 bill switcheroo on a store clerk because the clerk did not know the gimmick?
we catch them trying and call em out over here every season, and call the sherrif. Then educate the clerks.

For evil to succeed all it takes is good men to stay silent or do nothing.

There are a few of us hivernaughts that sniff out frauds and report them in order to stop
the scandalous trafficing in "fakes", and try to keep the hobby on the up-and-up.
If we don't stop them, who will?

Oh yes, and I report forest fires too.
And break-ins in progress.
And chase purse-snatchers.
And report gypsies trying to sell meat out of the back of their pickups...

I am not so callous as to stand by and watch others suffer, whether thru their
inability, infirmity or ignorance.

There are 3 types of people.

Cheats, Suckers, and Grudgers.
When the Suckers start dying off, the Cheats do too.
When the Grudgers start eliminating the Cheats, the Suckers reproduce at an alarming rate and start to berate the Grudgers for their "poor sportsmanship" against the Cheats.

Grudgers are Suckers who learned Life's lessons and applied them.
Education is the key here, which I see the Good Professor has included in his arsenal.
Pick your Cheats wisely, Professor, or you will be awash in Suckers.

Suckers have no other natural predators, except other Suckers who become lazy and morph into Cheats.
They feed on their own.
