newbie!

Howdy folks! Decided to take up target shooting with an Uberti 1858 Remington with case hard frame and 8" bbl. and received it last night UPS. It has the timing off where the bolt is peening the  cylinder stop cutout right on the leading edge. So it will be a while before it is done tuning with Goon and back to me. My first BP revolver was about 35 years ago and you can read my experience on the "chainfire" forum.  Now that I am retired and have PLENTY of free time, I needed a hobby that was fun and rewarding. I think punching paper with my own cast .457's and having the capability to regulate the powder charge, will be lots of fun. I still had my old Lee conical 220gr mold and have cast two hundred in the last couple days, my .457 mold is inbound. I live out in the country and my private range is just five miles away. I did deer and squirrel hunt for decades, and quit a few years ago. I still ride my ATV and take my canoe or kayak out once in a while. Old country boy here, Republican, Army vet., divorced with two grown and married girls, two granddaughters so far.  Just made my last house payment in June, so my usual monthly $460 payment will be available for my new hobby. I like the 1860 Army and that is my next purchase. Bummer I didn't get to fire the new Rem, but i know the wait will be worth it. Thanks for having me onboard!

Hi CnB.  Welcome to the forum.  When will you be getting that 1860?  Goon may have your '58 for a minuet so in the mean time you better get weaponed-up … old style.

(D@ from California. I have a Uberti 1858 stainless that was dropping the bolt early. Uberti parts are nicely machined and finished, they just need to do a little better job in final fitting.

Thank Y'all for the welcome aboard!  After reading numerous stories here about the 5.5" 1858 Sheriff model, I am looking for one of those right now. Anyone have one for sale at a decent price? They sound like a hoot to shoot! If I find a nice 1860, I won't pass it up. I would like an 1849 Colt Pocket also.

Cabela's has a good price on the Pietta 1858 Sheriff model .44 BP.  Well under $300.  They run them for $50 less a couple of times a year but, if you can't wait the everyday price is good.

Gun Broker usually has quite a few for sale, new and used.

I've owned the Pietta 8" version for about a year now and really like it.  It's accurate and reliable and looks good.  I also have my eye on the 5.5" Sheriff's model but, I think I'll wait for the next sale at Cabela's.  :)
I used store-bought RB initially but, have begun casting my own .454 RB to save about .10+ per ball.  My casting equipment will soon pay for itself as I save $10 for every 100 rds I fire.  I'm also looking into making my own wads.  This end of the hobby has many facets to keep you occupied and happy.  :)
