Help Needed Building Knife
« on: April 28, 2017, 08:57:35 PM »
I recently came into possession of what is apparently part of a knife kit.  I have the blade and the guard.  I can make some scales out of wood and rivet them on, but what has me stumped is the pommel, or whatever it is called.  How are the made?  Is there something I can buy for it.

I plan to grind off the finger grooves and make 19th century looking knife out of it, and then make a sheath for it.

If anyone can provide some direction on what to do, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

That knife wasn't designed for a pommel. You could grind the tang down some and pour one out of pewter. That's what I usually do.

I would just use some JB Weld to hold it in place doesn't look all the bad to me, plus for me it would be a safety thing.
I have used this place in the past for knife making supplies give them a look.

That blade blank is a full tang handle that you put scales on and then sand the scales to match the tang.  If you want a pommel handled knife then you need a blank that has a rat tail shape at the end and is threaded or grooved to hold a pommel.   You could grind it down for a pommel and epoxy one on.   Be careful grinding,  don't get it too hot.
There are lots of ways to put handles on knives.  The simplest and fastest is to epoxy the handle materials on.  Look on YouTube, lots videos on how to build a knife.
